Topiary conifers: spirals, pom pons and ball forms

A buyer’s guide to topiary conifers — which forms exist, where to use them and how to care for them after planting.

What topiary is

Topiary is the art of shaping plants by regular pruning. Conifers such as Leylandii and Cupressus arizonica are ideal because they grow densely and respond well to clipping. Each plant in our fields is shaped by hand over several seasons until the form is clear and even.

The forms we grow

Spirals in green Leylandii and blue Arizona cypress; pom pons with cloud-like balls along the stem, in green and yellow; three-ball standards with three stacked crowns; one-ball standards; and combined spiral-and-ball forms. Each form gives a different effect, from playful to strictly formal.

Where to use topiary

Pairs of spirals or ball standards frame entrances, gates and terraces. Rows of pom pons or three-ball forms give rhythm to driveways and formal gardens. In garden centres, topiary is a high-value product that attracts attention at the front of the display.

Care after planting

Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded spot with good drainage, and water regularly in the first season so the rootball does not dry out. Trim lightly once or twice a year, following the existing shape, to keep the form crisp.
